Why ECOPlanet?

With 70% of the global population expected to live in cities by 2050, the world needs to build the equivalent of New York City every month. ECOPlanet, the world’s broadest range of low-carbon cement, aims to tackle this challenge sustainably by reducing emissions from cement by at least 30%.

With Holcim’s industry-leading formulation expertise, ECOPlanet’s sustainability profile is driven by innovative low-emission raw materials. We use calcined clay and recycled construction demolition materials in our ECOPlanet formulations to reduce buildings’ CO2 footprint by up to 50%. By leveraging alternative fuels we can further decarbonize the ECOPlanet production process.
We are harnessing advanced technologies like Carbon Capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) to produce ECOPlanet Zero fully decarbonized cement.

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE PROJECT

The combination of Oxygen enrichment, adsorption and cryogenic purification is a novel technology that will enable low capture variable cost. Through this project, Holcim will transform the Milaki cement plant into a net carbon removal site.

It uses integrated oxygen efficiently enrichment to capture CO₂ from the flue gas of milaki cement plant with the least energy footprint.

The CO₂ capture rate is above 97%. The technology can manage impurities, particularly high levels of nitrogen oxides, to ensure the quality and safety of the captured CO₂.

CARBON CAPTURE TECHNOLOGIES

There are several mature Carbon Capture technologies with the potential to decarbonize cement production:

Post-combustion technologies

These types of technologies capture CO₂ in the exhaust gas of a traditional kiln system at the “end of the pipe”. The most advanced post-combustion solution uses solvents like amines to absorb CO₂, before sending the liquid to a regenerator which releases the CO₂ in a concentrated form. The solvent is then reused for absorption. Other technologies include separating CO₂ using membranes and adsorption processes.

Integrated processes

Alternatives to pure-post combustion capture are integrated processes including oxyfuel, the electrification of clinker manufacturing and the calcination of raw materials. The oxyfuel approach, for example, replaces air for combustion in the cement manufacturing process with oxygen to increase the concentration of CO₂ in the exhaust stream.
